Yilin Verse
濟河踰阨,脫母怵惕。四叔為衛,使惠不廢。
Crossing the river, passing through the narrows; freeing the mother from terror. The four uncles defend Wei, ensuring Lord Hui is not deposed.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wood grows within the earth, and someone crosses the Yellow River through perilous narrows, rescuing a mother from danger and distress. The 'four uncles' defend the state of Wei, ensuring that Duke Hui's line endures and is not extinguished. When the Di barbarians destroyed Wei in 660 BC, loyal retainers rallied to reconstitute the state at Cao and then at Chu Qiu. The verse celebrates those who risked their lives to preserve a threatened lineage and its governing institutions. Heaven and fire combine in the image of Fellowship: people of shared purpose uniting across barriers. From Pushing Upward to Fellowship, the slow growth of loyalty through hardship becomes the bond that transcends danger and distance.
