Yilin Verse
目鏡不明,冬災大傷。盜花失實,十年消亡。
The eye's mirror is not clear; winter's blight brings great harm. Blossoms stolen, fruit is lost; in ten years, all has perished.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wood grows within the earth, but the mirror of vision has gone dark and winter's catastrophe strikes with devastating force. Blossoms are stolen, leaving no fruit, and within ten years all has perished and disappeared. The 'stolen flowers' that bear no fruit suggest promise plundered before it can mature — a harvest sabotaged at the moment of greatest vulnerability by some unseen thief. Mountain over fire, the image of Grace, adorns the surface while deeper structures fail beneath. From Pushing Upward to Grace, the ascending growth is betrayed by ornamental distraction. What looks beautiful on the surface is hollow within: the eye cannot see clearly, the season is hostile, and decorative appearance masks a decade of slow annihilation.
