Yilin Verse

刻畫為飾,嫫母無鹽。毛嬙西施,求事必得。

Painting and adorning as decoration: Momo, Wuyan, Mao Qiang, Xi Shi. What one seeks shall surely be obtained.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wood grows within the earth, and even ugliness can be adorned into beauty through artful effort. Mo Mu and Wuyan were legendarily plain women of antiquity, yet Mao Qiang and Xi Shi were famed as the most radiant beauties of the age. The verse suggests that diligent transformation can bridge the gap between the homely and the sublime — that what is sought will surely be obtained through persistent refinement. Water over wind, the image of the Well, draws nourishment from deep below through a wooden bucket. From Pushing Upward to the Well, the organic ascent becomes the mechanism that brings hidden worth to the surface. Like the well's windlass, patient effort draws beauty from unlikely depths. Skill applied with care can transform the plainest vessel.
