Commentary
Water drawn up through wood, the well's virtue is fragrant when properly tended. On the southern mountain grow orchids and angelica, making the lord lovely and admired. The emperor's daughter, the eldest bride, is blessed with many grandchildren and numerous sons. Orchids and angelica (蘭茝) are the classical emblems of inner virtue and moral refinement, drawn from the Chu Ci tradition. The 'southern mountain' anchors this fragrance in a specific landscape of abundance. From The Well to Keeping Still, the doubled mountain stands in contemplation. The well's nourishing water, infused with mountain herbs, becomes the still fragrance of Gen: virtue cultivated in quietude, bearing fruit across generations without display.
