Yilin Verse

金齒銕牙,壽考宜家。年歲有儲,貪利者得。雖憂无咎。

Teeth of gold, jaws of iron; long-lived, fit to prosper the household. The year's stores are full; the greedy find profit. Though there be worry, no blame.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind over mountain gives way to fire and thunder: gradual development encounters the decisive bite of justice. Gold teeth and iron fangs suggest something built to last and endure, rewarding the household with longevity. The years accumulate stores of grain, and even the profit-seeker gains. Though there is worry, no real harm comes. From Development to Biting Through, the patient growth of the source hexagram hardens into the judicial firmness of the target. Fire above thunder: lightning illuminates what must be adjudicated and bitten through. The gold-and-iron teeth are both ornament and instrument, beauty that can cut. Gradual accumulation, once secured, requires the teeth to protect it, biting through whatever obstruction threatens the stored wealth.
