Yilin Verse

跛躓未起,失利後市,不得鹿子。

Stumbling and lame, unable to rise; losing profit at the late market, failing to catch the deer.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind over mountain returns to doubled wind: gradual development enters the penetrating repetition of the Gentle. Stumbling and not yet risen, one arrives late at the market; the deer fawn is not caught. The verse depicts a series of near-misses: the merchant who trips misses the market's best prices; the hunter who falls short loses the quarry. From Development to the Gentle, wind follows wind, the commander issues orders repeatedly. The Gentle's power lies in persistent, gentle infiltration, but the verse shows its shadow: when one stumbles at the wrong moment, even persistent effort cannot recover the lost opportunity. Gradual advance requires not just patience but precise timing. The deer does not wait for the stumbler to rise.
