Yilin Verse
乘風而舉,與飛鳥俱。一舉千里,見吾愛母。
Riding the wind and rising, soaring together with the birds. A single leap of a thousand li; there I see my beloved mother.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wind over mountain meets water above fire: gradual development reaches After Completion. Riding the wind and soaring aloft, traveling alongside the birds in flight. A single leap of a thousand li, and at last one sees the beloved mother. The verse captures the exhilaration of arrival: after the long gradual journey, one takes flight and crosses the final distance in an instant. From Development to After Completion, water sits above fire in perfect equilibrium, every line in its proper place. The gradual advance has achieved its goal. The wild goose that progressed step by step through hexagram 53 now rides the wind home. The reunion with the mother is the emotional culmination of patience: a thousand-li flight made possible by all the incremental steps that preceded it.
