Yilin Verse
鵠思其雄,欲隨鳳東。順理羽翼,出次須日。中留北邑,復反其室。
From the high tower gazing far — countless sail-shadows on the water. But you alone are not among them. When will you return?
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Thunder and fire join in Abundance, but the original verse tells of longing and delayed return. A swan-goose yearns for her mate and would follow the phoenix eastward. She grooms her feathers and wings, preparing to depart at dawn. Yet midway she is detained in a northern town and must return to her own chamber. The female bird's journey is interrupted — desire and readiness are insufficient when circumstances block the path. From Abundance to Peace, earth and heaven exchange positions in harmonious flow: the frustration of the incomplete journey resonates with Peace's promise that reunion will come when heaven and earth properly align, but only through patient waiting, not forced pursuit.
