Yilin Verse
日走月步,趨不同舍。夫妻反目,君主失國。
The sun runs, the moon walks; they hasten to different lodgings. Husband and wife turn against each other; the sovereign loses his kingdom.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Thunder and fire illuminate Abundance, yet the verse describes cosmic discord. Sun and moon move at different paces and lodge in separate houses. Husband and wife turn against each other; the sovereign loses his state. When the two luminaries — sun and moon, the very basis of Abundance's hexagram image — part ways, the foundation of order collapses. The domestic rupture mirrors the political: marital discord scales directly into dynastic failure. From Abundance to Fellowship, heaven and fire should illuminate together, yet the verse shows what Fellowship looks like when it fails: those who should be companions diverge irreconcilably. True fellowship demands shared rhythm; without it, even the most radiant union splinters into opposition.
