Yilin Verse

范公陶夷,巧賈貨資。東之營丘,易字子皮。抱珠載金,多得利歸。

Lord Fan smelts and trades, skillfully profiting from goods. East to Yingqiu he goes, changing his name to Zipi. Embracing pearls, laden with gold, he returns with great profit.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Paired lakes meet thunder and wind — Duration, the steadfast persistence that generates lasting wealth. Fan Li, styled Tao Zhu Gong, the master merchant who tamed the eastern trade routes, changed his name to 'Zipi' and traveled east to Yingqiu. Embracing pearls and carrying gold, he returned laden with profit. After helping Goujian destroy Wu, Fan Li withdrew from politics, took the alias Chi Yi Zipi, and amassed three fortunes through commerce at Tao. From The Joyous to Duration, the verse embodies the hexagram's core principle: persistence in the right direction. Fan Li's enduring success came not from a single gamble but from the steady, wind-and-thunder rhythm of buying cheap and selling dear, season after season.
