Yilin Verse
營室紫宮,堅不可攻。明神建德,君受大福。
The Yingshi Purple Palace; firm and impregnable. Bright spirits establish virtue; the lord receives great fortune.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Heaven and water oppose, but the celestial palaces — Yingshi and the Purple Palace — stand impregnable. The bright spirits establish virtue, and the ruler receives great blessings. Yingshi (營室, Pegasus) is the lunar mansion associated with palace construction and the foundation of cities. The Purple Palace (紫宮) is the Ziwei stellar enclosure surrounding the celestial pole — the emperor's cosmic residence, around which all stars revolve. From Conflict to Development, wind blows through trees on the mountain, growing gradually. Jian's image is slow, organic progress — the wild goose advancing by stages. The impregnable palace was not built in a day; its strength is the accumulation of virtue over time, each brick laid in proper sequence.
