Trigram Changes
Yilin Verse
大面長頸,未解君憂。
Broad of face and long of neck, yet unable to resolve the lord's concerns.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Water over lake measures and deliberates, yet here the measure falls short. Someone with a large face and long neck — imposing in appearance — cannot resolve the ruler's anxieties. The verse is terse, almost dismissive: stature without substance, presence without insight. From Limitation to Fellowship, the transformation highlights the gap between surface compatibility and genuine communion. Heaven and fire share their light, calling for those who truly belong together to recognize each other across the crowd. But the large-faced figure fails this test — he looks the part but cannot deliver. Fellowship demands inner resonance, not merely an impressive silhouette. Limitation's careful scrutiny exposes the impostor whom a less discerning eye might welcome.
