Yilin Verse

居華巔,觀浮雲。風不搖,雨不濡。心平安,无咎憂。

Dwelling on the flowered peak, watching the floating clouds. The wind does not shake, the rain does not drench. Heart calm and peaceful, without blame or worry.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Water sits above fire in perfect equilibrium, and one dwells upon a splendid summit, watching floating clouds drift past. The wind does not shake, the rain does not soak. The heart rests in peace, free from blame or worry. The verse is a portrait of serene elevation — above the turmoil of weather and the world, yet not detached from it. From After Completion to Grace, fire-and-water order yields to fire glowing beneath the mountain — illumination restrained by natural form. Grace is not mere decoration but the beauty that emerges when inner light is tempered by structure. The completed person stands at the height, ornamented not by effort but by the quiet radiance of a life that has found its proper form.
