Yilin Verse
金帛共寶,宜與我市。嫁娶有息,利得過倍。
Gold, silk, and precious treasure; fit for trading in the market. Marriages bear fine offspring; profits return doubled and more.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Fire above water, the situation unresolved, yet commerce flourishes. Gold, silk, and precious goods are fit for trade; marriages produce descendants; profits double and redouble. The verse reads like a merchant's oracle — auspicious for investment, alliances, and fertility alike. From Before Completion to Peace, the fire-over-water transforms into earth above heaven, the great interchange where heaven and earth mingle their energies. Peace is the hexagram of open exchange: what is above descends, what is below rises, and prosperity flows in both directions. The unsettled condition of Before Completion resolves not through force but through reciprocal trade — goods, vows, and blessings circulating freely until the market itself becomes the mechanism of completion.
