Yilin Verse

甕破盆缺,南行亡失。

The urn shatters, the basin cracks; traveling south, all is lost.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Fire above water, and everything shatters. The jar breaks, the basin cracks; heading south, all is lost. Two lines of pure destruction: vessels that should contain are broken, a journey that should arrive leads only to disappearance. From Before Completion to Duration, fire-over-water transforms into thunder above wind — the image of enduring constancy, the gentleman standing firm without changing course. The devastating brevity of the verse makes Duration's promise of permanence ring hollow, or perhaps essential. When jars break and goods vanish, what endures? Only the commitment not to change direction despite loss. Duration does not promise comfort; it promises that the one who stands firm will still be standing when the breakage stops.
