Yilin Verse
北山有棗,使叔壽考。東嶺多栗,宜行賈市。陸梁雌雉,所至利喜。
On the north mountain are jujubes, giving the uncle long life. On the east ridge, many chestnuts; fit for trade and market. The strutting hen pheasant; wherever she goes, joy and profit.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Water hidden within the earth sustains its people, and the verse surveys a landscape of natural bounty. The northern mountain bears jujubes, granting long life to one's uncle; the eastern ridge abounds in chestnuts, fit for trade and market. A hen pheasant struts boldly, and wherever she goes there is profit and joy. Every line radiates pastoral prosperity: the hills provide sustenance, commerce thrives, and even the wildlife moves with confident ease. From The Army to Enthusiasm, thunder erupts from the earth in joyful release. The army's disciplined containment breaks into celebratory energy — the stored resources of the campaign season now fuel feasts, music, and abundance shared freely.
