Yilin Verse
乘龍從蜺,徵詣北闕。乃見宣室,拜守東城。鎮慰黎元,舉家蒙福。
Riding the dragon, following the rainbow; summoned to the northern palace. Then received in the Xuan Chamber; appointed to guard the eastern city. Pacifying the common folk; the whole household receives blessings.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Water hidden within the earth propels a dramatic ascent. Riding a dragon and following a rainbow, one is summoned to the northern palace. There one enters the Xuanshi — the Audience Hall within the Han dynasty's Weiyang Palace, where Emperor Wen once received Jia Yi for a night-long discourse on the spirit world. Appointed to guard the eastern city, one pacifies the common people, and the entire household receives blessings. From The Army to Duration, thunder and wind sustain each other in perpetual motion. The official's appointment endures because it is grounded in both celestial mandate and popular welfare — a posting that lasts because it serves a lasting purpose.
