Yilin Verse
陳媯敬仲,兆興齊姜。乃適營丘,八世大昌。
Chen Gui Jingzhong; the omen foretold flourishing through Qi Jiang. He went to settle at Yingqiu; for eight generations, great prosperity.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Water upon earth carried Chen Jingzhong from his ruined homeland to a destiny he could not have foreseen. When civil strife drove him from the state of Chen around 672 BC, he fled to Qi and settled near Yingqiu. An oracle foretold that his descendants would supplant the ruling house of Jiang. Eight generations later, the Tian clan did exactly that, formally replacing the Jiang rulers of Qi in 386 BC. From Holding Together to Enthusiasm, the verse traces how an exile's alliance with a new state becomes a dynastic foundation. Yu's thunder erupting from the earth captures the moment a long-dormant lineage finally breaks through into sovereign power — the stored energy of eight generations released in a single transformation.
