Yilin Verse
純服黃裳,戴上與興。德義既生,天下歸仁。
Wearing pure garments and a yellow skirt, rising to serve and to flourish. With virtue and righteousness established, all under heaven returns to benevolence.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Dressed in plain robes with a yellow lower garment, one rises to serve alongside the sovereign. Virtue and righteousness flourish; all under heaven returns to benevolence. The yellow skirt is a direct echo of Kun hexagram's six-five line: 'Yellow lower garment, supremely auspicious' — yellow being the color of earth and the center, signifying measured, modest virtue. From Creative to Nourishment, mountain rests above thunder — the jaw in motion, the image of careful speech and moderate consumption. The verse shows how heaven's creative force, clothed in earth's humility, nourishes the entire realm. Not through display of power but through the quiet donning of proper garments does the world turn toward goodness.
