Yilin Verse
嬰孩求乳,母歸其子;黃麑悅喜,自樂甘餌。
The infant seeks its mother is milk; the mother returns to her child. The yellow fawn leaps with joy; delighting in its sweet food.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Heaven above the lake softens into a scene of natural belonging. An infant cries for milk and the mother returns to her child; a young fawn delights in sweet fodder, content with its nourishment. Every creature finds its proper place — the baby with the mother, the deer with the grass. There is no striving, no misstep; needs are met through the simplest bond. From Treading to Fellowship, fire rises into heaven and illuminates all alike. The careful distinctions of Treading dissolve into the warmth of recognition: when conduct is natural rather than calculated, fellowship arises as instinctively as a child reaching for its mother.
