Yilin Verse
周德既成,杼軸不傾;申酉趺暮,耋老衰去,箴石不祐。
The virtue of Zhou complete; loom and shuttle do not fail. Shen and You bring the twilight of old age; aged and worn, one declines. Acupuncture stones bring no aid.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Heaven and fire form Fellowship, but time undoes what virtue built. The virtue of Zhou is complete, the loom stands upright and does not tip — the state's fabric holds. Then the verse shifts to autumn's decline: by the hours of shen and you the day wanes, and the aged grow frail and depart. Acupuncture stones no longer help; medicine cannot restore what age has taken. From Fellowship to Treading, the transformation captures the passage from communal achievement to individual reckoning. Heaven above the lake, one must distinguish high from low. Zhou's collective virtue endures, but each person must still walk their own path into twilight, and that path does not bend to remedies.
