Yilin Verse
黃帝所生,伏羲之宅;兵刃不至,利以居止。
Where the Yellow Emperor was born; the dwelling of Fuxi. Blades and weapons do not reach here; advantageous for settling down.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Heaven above the lake, and the dwelling is sacred ground. This is the birthplace of the Yellow Emperor and the homeland of Fu Xi — the two culture heroes who gave humanity its foundational order. Weapons and blades cannot reach here; it is an auspicious place to dwell in peace. The verse invokes mythological geography: a primordial sanctuary where civilization began and violence cannot intrude. From Treading to the Family, wind emerges from fire. The transformation from careful public conduct to harmonious domestic order is complete. When one's dwelling rests on the foundations laid by the sages themselves, the household radiates warmth outward as naturally as wind rises from flame.
