Yilin Verse

群虎入邑,求索肉食;大人衛守,君不失國。

A pack of tigers enters the city, seeking meat to devour. The great man stands guard; the lord does not lose his state.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Heaven above the lake, and a pack of tigers enters the city seeking flesh. The predators have breached the walls, driven by hunger — a direct threat to civilization itself. But a great person stands guard, and the ruler does not lose his state. The verse stages the ultimate test of Treading: when the tiger is not merely a tail to be stepped on but a ravening force invading the settlement, only decisive leadership holds the line. From Treading to Abundance, thunder and lightning illuminate simultaneously. The great defender's vigilance transforms peril into power: the tiger at the gate, met with unwavering authority, becomes the catalyst for an era of decisive justice and blazing clarity.
