Yilin Verse
生直地乳,上皇大喜;賜我福祉,受命無極。
An earth-born treasure, a milky gem, rises from the ground; the sovereign is greatly pleased. He bestows blessing and favor upon us; the mandate received knows no limit.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Earth above heaven, Peace's fertile communion births a portent. A sweet spring (地乳) erupts directly from the earth, and the Supreme Sovereign rejoices. This is the language of imperial omens: when the earth spontaneously produces nourishment, heaven confirms the ruler's virtue. The sovereign bestows blessings and the mandate extends without limit. 'Earth's milk' (地乳) refers to a milky sweet spring, an auspicious geological phenomenon recorded in Han-dynasty omen catalogues. From Peace to Great Possession, fire blazes above heaven — illuminated abundance radiating in all directions. The transformation captures how genuine communion between heaven and earth produces signs of favor that confirm limitless mandate.
