Yilin Verse
禹將為君,北入崑崙;稍進揚光,登入溫湯,代舜為治,功德昭明。
Yu shall become the sovereign; northward he enters Kunlun. Advancing gradually, radiating glory; ascending to the hot springs. He succeeds Shun as ruler; his merit and virtue are brilliant and clear.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Yu is about to become sovereign. He journeys north to Kunlun, gradually advancing, his radiance spreading as he ascends into the warm springs before succeeding Shun as ruler — his merit and virtue shining clear. The verse traces Yu the Great's mythic journey from flood-tamer to sage-king, passing through Kunlun's sacred geography before receiving the mandate. From Great Possession to Peace, fire over heaven transforms into earth above heaven — the cosmic intercourse of heaven and earth that defines Tai. Yu's gradual, luminous ascent embodies this perfectly: the ruler who has earned heaven's trust through tireless labor now channels that mandate downward to nourish the world below. Merit radiates like fire, governance flows like earth receiving heaven.
