Yilin Verse

水流趨下,遠至東海;求我所有,買鮪與鯉。

Water flows downward, traveling far to the eastern sea. Seeking what we possess, we buy bream and carp.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Earth above heaven, Peace's energies flow downward to their natural destination. Water courses downhill and travels far to reach the Eastern Sea. One seeks what is already possessed, purchasing sturgeon and carp for the table. The verse captures the effortlessness of following natural momentum: water does not strive to reach the ocean, yet it arrives; the market offers what one needs without struggle. From Peace to Great Power, thunder rolls above heaven — yang at its most vigorous. The transformation shows Peace's gentle flow gathering into unstoppable force: what begins as water seeking its level becomes the thunderous assertion of power moving in its natural direction.
