Yilin Verse
眾惡之堂,相聚為殃,出毒良人,使道不通。
A hall of assembled evils; they gather to bring calamity. They spread poison against the worthy; they make the road impassable.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Thunder above heaven shakes the hall where evil men gather, conspiring harm. The verse depicts a court dominated by a malicious clique: they congregate as a faction, spread poison against the virtuous, and block the roads of governance until nothing can pass. This is the perennial threat of sycophants clustering around power, forming a cabal that chokes legitimate administration. From Great Power to Peace, the transformation is paradoxical: heaven and earth exchange positions in Tai, creating the free flow of creative energy. Yet the verse warns that this ideal communion can be perverted. When the powerful gather not for harmony but for mutual predation, the very channels meant for circulation become conduits for venom.
