Yilin Verse

澤狗水鳧,難畜少雛;不為家饒,心其函逋。

Otter and wild duck, hard to raise any brood. They do not enrich the household; their hearts harbor only flight.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Earth above heaven, Peace challenged by undomesticable creatures. Marsh dogs and water ducks are difficult to raise as chicks — their wild nature resists confinement. They contribute nothing to the household's abundance, and their hearts harbor thoughts of escape. The verse uses waterfowl husbandry as a metaphor for attempting to domesticate what is essentially wild: the creatures eat but do not produce, and they dream of open water. From Peace to The Gentle, doubled wind penetrates everywhere with persistent soft influence. The transformation suggests that what force cannot tame, persistent gentle persuasion may gradually accustom — but the wind must be patient, for wild creatures yield only to a touch they barely notice.
