Yilin Verse

三諧土廊,德義明堂。交讓往來,享燕相承。箕伯朝王,錫我玄黃。

Three harmonies in earthen halls; virtue illuminates the sacred chamber. Courtesies exchanged, guests come and go; feasting in mutual succession. The Earl of Ji pays homage to the king; we receive gifts of black and yellow silk.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind upon wind transforms into earth over heaven: the Gentle becomes Peace. Three harmonious corridors of earth line the hall of virtue and righteousness. Courtesies are exchanged, banquets flow in succession. The lord of Ji and Bo arrives to pay homage at court and is bestowed gifts of dark and yellow silk — the colors of heaven and earth. The verse evokes the Zhou ideal of ritual diplomacy: feudal lords arriving at the Son of Heaven's court, exchanging propriety, feasting together. From The Gentle to Peace, the transformation is fulfilled perfectly. Heaven below and earth above, their energies interpenetrate — this is the cosmic image of harmony. Wind's patient influence has built the institutional trust that makes such reciprocal ceremony possible.
