Yilin Verse
踝踵之傷,左指病癰;失旅後時,利走不來。
Injury to ankle and heel; the left finger swells with abscess. Missing the caravan, arriving too late; profit flees and will not come.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Earth above heaven, Peace's harmony, fractures into bodily injury. Ankles and heels are wounded, the left hand festers with an abscess. Having lost the army's momentum and missed the proper season, profit flees and cannot be reclaimed. The verse catalogs physical breakdown as a metaphor for strategic failure: a body too damaged to march mirrors a campaign launched at the wrong moment. Every wound compounds the delay. From Peace to Conflict, heaven and water diverge — forces that should align instead work at cross purposes. The transformation captures how harmonious conditions, once squandered through poor timing, devolve into discord where every initiative meets opposition.
