Yilin Verse

望驥不來,駒蹇為憂;雨驚我心,風撼我肌。

Hoping for the steed, it does not come; the colt is lame, cause for worry. Rain startles my heart; wind shakes my flesh.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Earth above heaven, Peace's expectation dissolves into anxiety. One watches for a fine steed on the horizon, but it never arrives; instead a lame colt stumbles forward, compounding worry. Rain startles the heart and wind shakes the body — nature itself turns hostile to the waiting figure. The hoped-for thoroughbred represents an ally, a promotion, or the return of someone important; receiving a limping foal instead is a cruel substitution. From Peace to Holding Together, water rests upon the earth, seeking unity — but unity requires a center worth gathering around. The transformation warns that when the awaited leader disappoints, those who gather may find only shared vulnerability.
