Yilin Verse
把珠入口,為我利寶;得吾所有,欣然嘉喜。
Placing a pearl in the mouth, it becomes my profit and treasure. Gaining what I possess, I am glad and greatly pleased.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Heaven and earth stand sealed, yet a pearl is placed into the mouth and becomes a precious treasure. One gains what was already one's own, and joy overflows. From Standstill to Treading, Pi's blocked world opens into the image of heaven above and lake below — propriety and careful distinction. Lu's counsel is to tread on the tiger's tail without being bitten, which demands knowing exactly what belongs to you and claiming it with precision. The pearl in the mouth is wealth internalized — not seized from outside but recognized as inherent. The verse transforms Standstill's deprivation into Treading's confident step: amid stagnation, the wise person discovers that the treasure was always within reach, requiring only the discernment to claim it.
