Yilin Verse

天之奧隅,堯舜所居;可以存身,保我邦家。

Heaven's hidden corner, where Yao and Shun once dwelt. One may preserve the body there, and protect our domain and home.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Heaven and earth stand apart, yet there exists a hidden corner of heaven where Yao and Shun once dwelt — a place that preserves life and protects the state. From Standstill to Contemplation, Pi's blockage transforms into wind moving over the earth, the ancient kings' inspection tours that observed the people and established teachings. Guan's essence is the elevated vantage point from which patterns become visible. The verse locates this vantage in the 'hidden recess of heaven' — not the open sky but a secluded refuge associated with the sage-kings. In times of stagnation, preservation comes not from action but from finding the right position for observation, the still point from which Yao and Shun once governed by watching and understanding.
