Yilin Verse
宜昌娶婦,東家歌舞,長樂歡喜。
Fit to prosper, he takes a bride; the eastern house sings and dances. Lasting joy and delight.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Heaven and fire form Fellowship, and the verse is pure wedding joy. It is fitting and propitious to take a bride; the eastern neighbor's household celebrates with song and dance; long-lasting happiness and delight fill the air. No shadows, no complications — the fellowship of marriage at its most auspicious. From Fellowship to Coming to Meet, the transformation shifts from planned union to unexpected encounter. Heaven above the wind in Coming to Meet, the ruler issues proclamations to the four quarters. The bride arrives as wind arrives beneath heaven — a gentle, pervasive presence. Marriage here is not conquest but reception: the household opens its doors and the wind of new life enters.
