Hexagram 44: Coming to Meet → Hexagram 13: Fellowship
Changing Lines
This transformation involves 2 changing lines (lines 1, 2).
Line 1
初六 繫于金柅。貞吉。有攸往。見凶。羸豕孚蹢躅。
Six at the beginning means: It must be checked with a brake of bronze. Perseverance brings good fortune. If one lets it take its course, one experiences misfortune. Even a lean pig has it in him to rage around.
Line 2
九二 包有魚。无咎。不利賓。
Nine in the second place means: There is a fish in the tank. No blame. Does not further guests.
Trigram Changes
Yilin Verse
陰為陽賊,君不能剋。舉動失常,利无所得。
Yin is the thief of yang; the lord cannot prevail. Actions lose their proper order; profit is nowhere to be found.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wind beneath heaven is subverted from within. Yin acts as yang's saboteur, and the ruler cannot overcome the inversion. Every action deviates from the norm, and no advantage can be gained. The verse articulates a core concern of hexagram 44: the single yin line entering from below threatens to undermine the five yang lines above. When the feminine principle becomes predatory rather than receptive, the entire structure of governance loses coherence. From Coming to Meet to Fellowship, heaven and fire blaze together — yet the fellowship here is ironic, for how can like-minded unity form when the enemy wears a friend's face? The encounter delivers a Trojan horse.
