Yilin Verse
魁行搖尾,逐雲吹水;汙泥為陸,下田為稷。
The Great Bear walks and wags its tail, chasing clouds and stirring waters. Marshland becomes dry land; the low fields are planted with millet.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Heaven and fire form Fellowship as a great creature stirs the waters. A massive form lumbers forward, wagging its tail, chasing clouds and blowing across the water. Muddy marshland becomes dry ground; lowland paddies are planted with millet. The verse stages a primordial act of land reclamation — some immense force transforming wetland into arable field. From Fellowship to Development, the transformation mirrors this gradual conversion. Trees grow upon the mountain in Development; the noble man dwells in worthy virtue and improves customs. Development's patient, stage-by-stage progress matches the verse's agrarian metamorphosis: what begins as chaotic water eventually becomes ordered fields, one layer of sediment at a time.
