Yilin Verse
衣裳顛倒,為王來呼;成就東周,邦國大休。
Clothes and cap thrown on in haste, summoned by the king. They establish the Eastern Zhou; the domain and state find great repose.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Heaven and fire form Fellowship as loyal subjects rush to answer the king's summons. Clothes thrown on inside-out in haste — so urgent is the call that dressing properly can wait. The result of this selfless response: the Eastern Zhou is established, and the entire realm celebrates. The image of inverted garments echoes the Shijing ode 'Dongfang Weiming' where lovers dress hastily, but here the urgency is political. The Duke of Zhou's stabilization of the dynasty demanded exactly this: ministers abandoning personal comfort for the state's survival. From Fellowship to Inner Truth, the transformation grounds this urgent action in sincerity. Wind above the lake in Inner Truth — the noble man deliberates on criminal cases with care. Haste born of genuine loyalty produces lasting order.
