Yilin Verse
南國盛茂,黍稷醴酒;可以享老,樂以嘉友。
The southern realm thrives in lush abundance; millet wine and rice spirits. Fit to nourish the elders; joyful in the company of fine friends.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
The southern lands flourish in abundance: grain and millet ripen, sweet wine flows freely. Enough to feast the elders, enough to gladden dear friends. The verse paints an agrarian paradise — the harvest so generous it sustains both ritual obligation to honor elders and communal joy in celebrating with companions. From Great Possession to Fellowship, fire over heaven becomes heaven with fire — the same elements now oriented toward human communion. Fellowship's image is heaven and fire sharing one direction, and the verse embodies this: shared abundance creates shared identity. The feast is the mechanism of fellowship, turning private wealth into collective belonging.
