Yilin Verse
上義崇德,以建大福;明哲且聰,周武立功。
Upholding righteousness, exalting virtue; thereby great blessings are built. Wise, perceptive, and discerning; King Wu of Zhou accomplished his work.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Upholding righteousness and honoring virtue, one establishes great blessings. Wise, discerning, and perceptive — these are the qualities of Kings Wen and Wu who founded the Zhou dynasty's achievement. The verse names the paradigmatic rulers directly: King Wu who completed the military conquest, paired with the implicit King Wen whose moral foundation made it possible. From Great Possession to The Family, fire above heaven becomes wind emerging from fire — warmth radiating outward as gentle influence. The Family hexagram teaches that words must have substance and actions must have constancy. Wen and Wu exemplify this: civil virtue and martial resolve combined within one household, one ruling family whose inner order projected outward to transform the realm.
