Yilin Verse

火雖熾,在吾後;寇雖多,在吾右;身安吉,不危殆。

Though fire rages, it is behind me. Though bandits are many, they are at my right. The body is safe and sound, meeting no peril.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Fire in heaven — Great Possession's blaze — here becomes a shield rather than a threat. The fire rages, but it burns behind me. The raiders are many, but they flank my right, not my front. Body safe, fortune auspicious, no danger approaches. The verse reads like a battlefield divination where every peril is positioned just outside harm's reach. From Great Possession to Waiting, clouds gather over heaven: danger is real but not yet upon you. Waiting's wisdom is precisely this — knowing that the threat exists yet trusting in one's position. The fire that defines Great Possession is here repurposed as a rear guard, and the enemies are kept at a manageable distance. Composure, not combat, is the counsel.
