Trigram Changes
Yilin Verse
長夜短日，陰為陽賊；萬物空枯，藏於北陸。
Long nights, short days; yin preys upon yang. All things wither and empty; they are hidden in the northern land.

Commentary
Earth holds the mountain, and the long night swallows the short day — yin thieves from yang, stripping its light. All things wither and empty out, retreating to their northern hiding places for winter's storage. The imagery is the winter solstice: darkness at its maximum, life withdrawn underground. From Modesty to Development, wind grows atop the mountain like trees slowly ascending the slope. The paradox is sharp: the verse describes winter's nadir while the target hexagram speaks of gradual growth. Yet Development begins precisely from this buried state — the tree's roots grow in winter darkness before the trunk pushes upward in spring. Modesty's earth holds the dormant mountain, and Development's slow unfolding starts from this very stillness, this very cold.
