Yilin Verse

令妻壽母,宜家無咎;君子之歡,得以長久。

A worthy wife, a long-lived mother; the household prospers without fault. The gentleman joy shall endure long.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Thunder rises from the earth in harmonious celebration. A good wife and a long-lived mother grace the household; the family prospers without fault. The gentleman's joy endures for years to come. The verse is straightforwardly auspicious — domestic happiness, filial completeness, and lasting contentment. From Enthusiasm to Standstill, the transformation offers a subtle reading: Standstill depicts heaven and earth failing to communicate, a time when the gentleman must practice frugality and withdraw from public ambition. Yet the verse finds joy precisely in this withdrawal — the domestic sphere flourishes even when the outer world stagnates. True enthusiasm, properly channeled, creates an inner haven that Standstill's blocked energies cannot reach.
