Yilin Verse

一夫兩心,枝刺不深;所為無功,求事不成。

One man with two minds; the thorn planted without depth. What is done achieves nothing; what is sought does not succeed.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Thunder erupts from the earth, but the man has two hearts in one body — his commitment is divided, and the graft does not take root. Everything he attempts fails; nothing he seeks comes to fruition. A branch forced into alien bark will not grow deep. The image is simple and devastating: half-heartedness guarantees failure. From Enthusiasm to Approach, the irony is pointed. Approach's image is earth above the lake — the ruler descending to meet the people with boundless care and protection. But divided intention cannot approach anything genuinely. Enthusiasm split between competing desires reaches neither goal, and the branch withers because it never committed to a single trunk.
