Yilin Verse

飛蜎蠕動,各有配偶;小大相保,咸得其所。

Winged insects and creeping things, each has its mate; small and great protect one another -- all find their proper place.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Earth above the lake erupts into thunder rising from the earth — Enthusiasm's joyful energy. Flying insects and creeping creatures each find their mate; the small and great protect one another, and all obtain their proper place. The verse celebrates the natural order at its most harmonious: even the humblest organisms participate in cosmic pairing. Nothing is too insignificant to deserve companionship and mutual support. From Approach to Enthusiasm, the elder's careful oversight releases into spontaneous celebration. Thunder bursting from the earth is nature's own music — the ancestral hymn that resonates through every living thing. When each creature finds its match, the world itself becomes a festival.
