Yilin Verse

日中為市,交易資寶。各利所有,心悅以喜。

At midday the market convenes; goods and treasures are exchanged. Each profits from what the other has; hearts are pleased and glad.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Thunder breaks from the earth at high noon as the marketplace opens. At midday the people trade their goods and treasures, each profiting from what the other possesses, and all depart with contented hearts. The 'midday market' echoes the Xici Zhuan's account of Shen Nong establishing markets at noon: 'Gather the world's people, collect the world's goods; trade and withdraw, each obtaining what they need.' From Enthusiasm to Decrease, the transformation is subtler than it first appears. Decrease's image is the mountain above the lake — the lower diminished to augment the upper. Yet the market works precisely because decrease and increase are mutual: each party gives up what they have in surplus to gain what they lack, and the transaction itself is the mechanism of Decrease's deeper logic.
