Yilin Verse

中原有菽,以待雉食。飲御諸友,所求大得。

In the central plain grow beans, waiting for the pheasant to feed. Wine poured for all friends gathered -- what is sought is greatly gained.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Thunder erupts from the earth, and the central plain grows rich with beans awaiting the pheasants that come to feed. Friends are entertained with food and drink, and all that is sought is abundantly obtained. The verse radiates agricultural hospitality: the land produces, creatures gather to eat, and guests are welcomed with generous provisions. The Shijing allusion to 'beans in the central field' evokes the odes of harvest and communal feasting. From Enthusiasm to Gathering, the transformation is seamless. The lake gathers upon the earth as people naturally congregate where abundance flows. Enthusiasm expressed as generosity creates a center of gravity — what the host provides, the guests affirm, and the community crystallizes around shared nourishment.
