穿鼻繫棘,為虎所拘。王母祝禱,禍不成災,突然脫來。

Nose pierced, bound with thorns, held captive by the tiger. The Queen Mother prays and entreats; disaster does not become calamity, and suddenly it breaks free.

Commentary

Lake upon earth gives way to thunder rising from the earth, the joyful release of Enthusiasm. A beast is pierced through the nose and tethered to thorns, held captive by a tiger. But the Queen Mother offers prayers, and disaster does not become catastrophe; suddenly the captive breaks free. The Queen Mother (Wang Mu) likely refers to the Queen Mother of the West, guardian of celestial blessing and longevity, whose intercession can reverse mortal peril. From Gathering to Enthusiasm, the transformation is dramatic rescue: what was bound is loosed, what was trapped erupts into movement. Thunder breaking from the earth mirrors the captive's sudden liberation, as though the ground itself refuses to hold what has been unjustly restrained.
