Yilin Verse

吾有驊騮,畜之以時。東家翁孺,來請我車;價極可與,後無賤悔。

I possess a fine steed, kept and raised in its due season. The eastern neighbor elder and children come to ask for my carriage; the price is high enough to accept -- later there is no cheap regret.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Thunder breaks from the earth in well-timed confidence. 'I possess a fine huali steed and have raised it at the proper season.' The neighbors send their elders to request the use of the carriage; the price is agreed upon and the deal is struck — no regret follows. The verse celebrates patient investment paying off: a horse raised with proper timing, now valuable enough that others come seeking it. From Enthusiasm to The Arousing, the doubled thunder amplifies the original impulse. What began as enthusiastic rearing becomes the startling moment of realization — the asset's worth is recognized, the transaction completed with satisfaction on both sides. Proper timing in cultivation produces the thunderclap of return.
