Yilin Verse

金精耀怒,帶鈞通午。徘徊高庫,宿於木下。兩虎相拒,弓弩滿野。

Metal essence blazes in fury, belted blade aligned to noon. Pacing before the high armory, sheltering beneath the trees. Two tigers confront each other; bows and crossbows fill the field.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Thunder doubled transforms into thunder over earth: from pure shock to marshalled enthusiasm. Metal essence blazes in fury, its belt-hooks spanning from south to north. Tigers pace before a towering arsenal, sheltering beneath the trees, while two tigers face off and crossbows fill the open field. The imagery is entirely martial — gleaming weapons, prowling predators, massed archery. The 'two tigers confronting each other' (兩虎相拒) is a classical metaphor for two great powers locked in standoff. From The Arousing to Enthusiasm, thunder emerging from the earth, the verse depicts the moment when latent military energy bursts forth in organized display. Enthusiasm here is not joy but mobilization — the coordinated thunder that shakes the ground when armies finally march.
