Yilin Verse

星隕如雨,弓弱無輔,強陽制陰,不得安土。

Stars fall like rain; the bow is weak, without support. The strong yang oppresses the yin -- one cannot find safe ground.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Thunder breaks from the earth, but the sky rains falling stars. The verse evokes a meteor shower — 'stars fall like rain' — while the bow lacks its reinforcing horn, too weak to shoot. Strong yang suppresses yin, and no one can settle peacefully on the land. The celestial portent of falling stars was traditionally read as heaven withdrawing its mandate, a sign of cosmic disorder. The weaponless bow compounds the helplessness: even self-defense is impossible. From Enthusiasm to Conflict, the pattern resonates — heaven and water move in opposite directions, a fundamental mismatch. Joyful momentum collides with structural opposition, and without the means to assert oneself, one is displaced by forces beyond negotiation.
